Hose Bib & Backflow Replacement

When temperatures plummet here in Fort Collins, you might notice your hose bib or spigot leaking. Freezing weather can put extra stress on your plumbing, including your hose bib and sprinkler backflow preventer. You may also need general maintenance year-round, as these systems can break down in warm and cool weather alike.

Aspen Plumbing is here to help. We’ll make sure your hose bib and backflow preventer are working as they should. If they aren’t, our master plumber can replace them.

What is a hose bib?

A hose bib, spigot, or faucet is an outdoor hookup for hoses. Water flows from inside your house and through the hose, controlled by a small knob on the hose bib. If you’ve ever watered flowers, irrigated your lawn, or played in the sprinkler as a kid, you were probably getting your water through a hose bib.

What does a backflow preventer do?

A backflow preventer makes sure water only flows in one direction. With this device, you don’t risk dirty water flowing backward through the system and into your clean water supply. These are commonly found in sprinkler and lawn irrigation systems.

How do I know if I need to replace my hose bib or backflow preventer?

As with many plumbing issues, a good sign that your hose bib or backflow preventer may not be working is if you notice leakage. With a hose bib, you may also notice irregular water flow and squeakiness when you turn the handle.

With a backflow preventer, you may see a reduction in water pressure, discolored water, and visible sediment in the water.

Can you repair hose bibs and backflow preventers?

In some cases, yes. Leaking from a hose bib can be caused by loose parts within the hose bib. You may be able to change out these parts or tighten them to stop the leak. If this doesn’t work or the leak returns, you may need to replace the hose bib entirely.

Some backflow preventers can be repaired, but these repairs can be difficult. It’s best to reach out to a master plumber to ensure you don’t damage your backflow preventer.
