What types of toilets are available?

While it might seem like all toilets are the same, you have options when it comes to replacing your toilet. Some factors you may consider in selecting a toilet include:

  • Toilet style. Toilets come in one-piece, two-piece, and wall-mounted designs. One-piece and wall-mounted toilets are easier to clean and have a sleeker aesthetic than their two-piece counterparts. However, two-piece toilets tend to be more cost-effective.

  • Water usage. While older toilets use up to 6 gallons of water per flush, newer toilets use just over a gallon of water per flush. Power-assisted and low-flow toilets often use less water than standard gravity-assisted toilets, making them a good choice for folks looking to conserve water.

  • Bowl shape. Elongated toilet bowls are usually more comfortable, but take up more space than round toilet bowls.

  • Toilet height. Standard-height toilets are perfect for guest bathrooms, kids’ bathrooms, and homes with shorter occupants. Chair-height toilets, also referred to as comfort-height toilets, can be more comfortable for taller folks and those with mobility issues that make it more difficult to stand up from a standard-height toilet.

How do I know it’s time to replace my toilet?

On average, a toilet can last about 25 years. Whether it’s been 25 years or not, you may want to replace your toilet if:

  • It clogs easily. If your toilet is older, this may be because older models don’t flush as efficiently as newer models. In a newer toilet, regular clogging may be a sign that there’s something stuck further into the pipes. A master plumber can check to see what’s causing the clog and if a replacement is necessary.

  • It needs to be flushed multiple times. In some cases, this is due to plumbing issues or other repairable problems with your toilet. If not, your toilet may be hitting its expiration date and will require a replacement.

  • You’re calling a plumber repeatedly to repair it. As with anything, if your toilet needs frequent repairs, it might be time to get a new one.
