Water Heater Installation

When your water heater stops working, you don’t want to wait too long to get it replaced. Being without hot water can make it unpleasant to do everything from showering to cleaning your house, especially here in Fort Collins, where temperatures can drop well below freezing.

Aspen Plumbing is here to help. We’ll work with you to decide if you need a new water heater and which one is right for you if you do. Once we know what you need, our master plumber will install your new water heater and ensure you get hot water flowing again as soon as possible.

What types of water heaters are available?

The two most common types of water heaters are tank water heaters and tankless water heaters.

Tank water heaters heat water and hold it in a large, insulated storage tank until you need it. These tanks can store anywhere from 30 to 75 gallons of heated water. If the water cools down before you use it all, the heater will turn back on to reheat it to the set temperature. The biggest benefit of these water heaters is cost; they tend to be more affordable than many other water heaters. However, with a tank water heater, you only have so much hot water you can use at one time. If someone in your household loves taking a long shower, they may use up the hot water faster than it can be replenished. Tank water heaters are also larger, as they require enough space to store the heated water.

Tankless water heaters heat water as you’re using it. This means you get an endless supply of hot water. Without the need for a storage tank, tankless water heaters are less than half the size of tank water heaters. They also tend to use less energy, as they only heat the water you need when you need it. The only downside is the cost. Tankless water heaters generally cost more than tank water heaters, so if cost is your top concern, a tankless water heater may not be the right choice.

How do I know if my water heater needs to be replaced?

Your water heater may need to be replaced if:

  • Your water isn’t warm. This is often one of the biggest reasons people reach out to get their water heater replaced.

  • Your water is rusty or tastes metallic. This can indicate corrosion or other damage to your water heater.

  • It’s more than 10 years old. Tankless water heaters may last as long as 20 years with proper maintenance, but if you notice any of the other signs listed here, it may be time for a replacement.
